Your flight lands in Cancun, but your holiday is in Playa del Carmen, 34 miles south along the Riviera Maya, in the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico. The drive is simple and there is only one road, yet this is where a lot of travellers lose an hour or a thousand pesos in their first sixty minutes in the country. We compared the six ways to make the trip, with the prices people are actually paying in September 2026, and the right answer depending on whether you are alone, as a couple or with kids.
How far is Cancun airport from Playa del Carmen?
Cancun International Airport (CUN) sits 34 miles, or 55 km, from downtown Playa del Carmen, along federal Highway 307. Allow 45 minutes to 1 h 15 depending on traffic and on what you travel in. The short answer: it is close, and there is a single road.
It depends where in Cancun you start:
- Cancun airport (CUN) to Playa del Carmen: about 34 miles, 45 min to 1 h 15.
- Downtown Cancun to Playa del Carmen: about 42 miles, 1 h to 1 h 20.
- Cancun hotel zone to Playa del Carmen: about 47 miles, 1 h 10 to 1 h 30.
The airport lies south of the city, so it is closer to Playa than Cancun itself. You have no reason to go into Cancun: you join Highway 307 southbound straight from the terminals, a well maintained dual carriageway with no tolls. Traffic thickens between 7am and 9am and between 5pm and 7pm, which is the whole difference between a 45 minute run and a 1 h 15 one.

Our call, plainly: the ADO bus alone or as a couple, a private transfer from three people up. Those two cover 90 percent of arrivals.
The ADO bus: the best value from the terminals
The ADO bus is the cheapest and one of the most reliable ways to reach Playa del Carmen from Cancun airport. Around 258 to 270 pesos ($14 to $15) per person, about 1 h 15 on the road, air conditioning, reclining seats, luggage hold.
- Departures from terminals 2, 3 and 4. Walk out of your terminal and look for the red and white ADO coaches and their ticket booth. Do not follow anyone offering to walk you there.
- Every 30 to 60 minutes, roughly 8am to 10pm. Landing after 10pm means no bus, so you need a transfer.
- Tickets at the terminal booths, card or cash, or online on the ADO site, which spares you the queue after a long haul flight.
- You arrive at the Terminal Turistica in Playa del Carmen, 5a Avenida at Calle 12, next to the ferry pier and right in the centre. Central hotels are under a 15 minute walk; for Playacar or the north end, a taxi from the terminal runs 100 to 150 pesos ($6 to $9).
The honest limits: the bus drops you downtown, not at your hotel, it does not run overnight, and 1 h 15 is the good case. When the coach calls at several terminals before leaving the airport, the same trip stretches to 1 h 50.
Note too that there is no colectivo from the airport. The shared white vans at 40 to 60 pesos link downtown Cancun, Playa and Tulum along Highway 307, but they are not allowed onto airport grounds. They will be your daily transport once you are settled, not your arrival transfer, as we explain in getting around Playa del Carmen.
The shared shuttle: dropped at your hotel without the private price
A shared shuttle costs 400 to 600 pesos ($24 to $35) per person and drops you at your hotel door. You share an 8 to 12 seat van with other travellers heading down the Riviera Maya. Allow 1 h to 1 h 30, because of the intermediate stops.
It is a sound compromise for one traveller with luggage and a hotel away from the centre. Two things to check before you book: the wait at the airport, since some operators hold the van until it fills, which can mean 30 to 45 minutes, and the drop off order, because being last means an extra half hour. Book online with your flight number.
As a couple, do the sum. Two shuttle seats come to 800 to 1,200 pesos, and a private transfer starts at 1,200 pesos. For a few hundred pesos you get no wait, no other stops and a driver holding a sign with your name. We would pay the difference.
The private transfer: the right call with a family or a group
A private transfer costs 1,200 to 1,800 pesos ($71 to $106) per vehicle for a van seating up to 8, and it is what we recommend as soon as you are three or more. Your driver waits at the terminal exit with your name on a board, and you are at the hotel 45 minutes to an hour later. Why it wins with a family:
- The price is per vehicle, not per person. For four people that is 300 to 450 pesos each ($16 to $24), less than a shared shuttle seat.
- Child seats on request, free or 100 to 200 pesos ($6 to $12): say so when you book, it is not automatic.
- No waiting, no connection, which counts for a lot after 10 to 12 hours in the air with children.
- Flight tracking: land two hours late and the driver is still there.
Book online before you fly, never on arrival. The "private transfers" sold inside the airport are the official taxis, at 1,400 to 2,000 pesos. Serious operators send a confirmation the day before with the driver's name and a WhatsApp number.
The official airport taxi: expensive, emergencies only
An official taxi from Cancun airport to Playa del Carmen costs 1,400 to 2,000 pesos ($82 to $118), the price of a private transfer booked online, without any of the guarantees. Fares are posted at counters inside the terminal and paid in advance. The one case where it makes sense: a late flight with no transfer booked, or a booking that fell through.
Two absolute rules. Never get into a car offered by a tout away from the official counters. And do not count on ride hailing at the airport: Uber is legal in Quintana Roo, but at Cancun airport the ride goes through Uber Taxi, which sends a licensed taxi at the regulated fare. It is calmer than the pavement, but it is not cheaper than the counter.
Renting a car: only if you plan to explore
A rental car from Cancun airport costs 700 to 1,100 pesos ($41 to $65) a day with insurance, and it is the right choice if you intend to move: cenotes, Tulum, Coba, Bacalar. Highway 307 is easy driving and you will be in Playa in 45 minutes to an hour.
The trap catches almost everyone: insurance. Third party liability cover, "Responsabilidad Civil", is compulsory in Mexico, must come from a Mexican insurer, and your credit card does not replace it. Comparison sites advertise $5 a day rates without it, and the counter then adds it, often 400 to 600 pesos a day. The real total lands around 700 to 1,100 pesos a day for a small car. An offer far below that is not the final price.
Three reflexes: book with an agency that shows liability cover included in the total and keep the screenshot; photograph the car before you drive off; and budget parking in Playa, 100 to 200 pesos ($6 to $12) a day downtown.

The Maya train: possible, not the most practical
The Maya train has a station on Cancun airport grounds and one at Playa del Carmen, but the Playa station is out of town and you still need an onward hop. Allow 1 h 30 to 2 h door to door, against 1 h 15 on the ADO bus.
The service reopened on 15 August 2026 after months of closure on section 5, and it runs two trains a day each way, about 49 minutes, from 148 pesos ($8) in tourist class. At the airport a free electric shuttle links terminals 1 to 4 to the station. Two catches. Both departures are in the morning, so an afternoon landing cannot use it at all. And the Playa del Carmen station sits west of town, off Highway 307: the Tren Maya Conecta intermodal service links it to the downtown ADO terminal, to Plaza Playacar and to the hotel zone for 55 pesos ($3), otherwise budget about 150 pesos for a taxi.
The train is comfortable and cheap, but it does not replace the bus for an arrival transfer: two departures a day beats nothing only if your flight lands early. Keep the Maya train for a day trip to Valladolid, Merida or Bacalar during your stay.
Which option fits your trip
Solo: the ADO bus, no hesitation. Under 270 pesos, a coach every 30 to 60 minutes, and you arrive downtown. After 10pm, a shared shuttle.
As a couple: the ADO bus if your hotel is central and you travel light. Otherwise the private transfer at 1,200 to 1,800 pesos for the two of you, a few hundred pesos more than two shuttle seats, with a door to door drop and no waiting.
Family with children: the private transfer, no argument. Child seats, no wait, no changes, and for four the price falls to 300 to 450 pesos a head.
Group of 4 to 8: the private transfer again. A van at 1,800 pesos for eight works out at 225 pesos each, cheaper than the bus.
Exploring the peninsula: the rental car, insurance verified before you book. For under 5 days centred on Playa, rent by the day once you are there instead.
Landing between 10pm and 6am: a private transfer booked in advance, whatever the group size. The buses have stopped and this is the hour when the touts push hardest.
The traps in the Cancun airport arrivals hall
The walk out of Cancun airport is where an unprepared traveller loses more money than anywhere else on the trip. Nothing dangerous, just an aggressive commercial corridor between customs and the kerb. Three classic traps.
Transport touts. From the baggage hall onward, people in shirts and lanyards offer an "official transfer". They are salespeople, not airport staff. Say "no, gracias" and keep walking. Your booked driver waits outside, never in the hall.
Timeshare desks. Official looking counters offer a "free shuttle" or a SIM card in exchange for your contact details and a "90 minute presentation" at a resort. That is a timeshare pitch: the presentation runs half a day and the pressure is real. There is no free transfer.
The taxi with no quoted fare. A driver who does not state the price up front, or who talks in dollars without saying which ones, will cost you double. Official taxis have posted fares and are paid at the counter, inside the terminal. Anything negotiated on the pavement is outside the system.

Going back: Playa del Carmen to Cancun airport
For an international flight, plan to be at the airport 3 hours before departure, which means leaving Playa del Carmen 4 h to 4 h 30 before take off. The drive back takes 45 minutes to 1 h 15, but check in and security at Cancun are slow in high season, December to March. The same options work in reverse:
- ADO bus from the Terminal Alterna, Avenida 20 at Calle 12, marked "Aeropuerto", with regular departures from morning to evening. Buy the ticket the day before for an early flight, and check which airport terminal you need before you get off.
- Private transfer: book it with the inbound leg, since most operators discount the round trip, around 2,000 to 2,900 pesos ($118 to $171) for both.
- Taxi from Playa: 900 to 1,200 pesos ($53 to $71), price agreed before you get in, or ask your hotel to call one.
- Rental car: add 30 minutes for the return inspection and the shuttle back to the terminal.
